One Ocean: Around the Americas
The Skagit Valley College (SVC) Foundation is thrilled to partner with the Around the Americas project, an environmental sailing expedition aboard Sailing Vessel (S/V) One Ocean. This ambitious initiative brings together visionary ocean leaders dedicated to restoring the health of our oceans and advancing a sustainable ocean economy.
SVC Foundation and Around the Americas share a common goal to enhance student learning and achievement, contributing to the educational, personal, and economic success of our students.
Think Global, Act Local
The journey begins at Skagit Valley College’s Marine Technology Program in Anacortes, WA, where SVC Marine Technology students will prepare the vessel for its voyage around the Americas. S/V One Ocean will then embark on a 14+ month circumnavigation of the Americas, making stops at over 53 ports.
During this expedition, S/V One Ocean will serve as a platform for ocean scientists, innovators, educators, and enthusiasts to collect and share valuable scientific data from pole to pole. This project emphasizes equitable access to information and science, linking our local community with others across North and South America.
From Kindergarten to College
Skagit Valley College students will play a crucial role in preparing the vessel for its journey and supporting the project throughout its course. SVC students from various disciplines, including Marine Technology, Marine Biology, Physics, and Environmental Science, will be actively involved in the project.
Additionally, Skagit County students from kindergarten through high school will benefit from a comprehensive K-12 curriculum designed to integrate the project into classrooms across the region.
