Early Learning and Childcare Center

In 2017, Sue Krienen stepped forward with a generous $250,000 pledge to help Skagit Valley College address a community shortage in childcare facilities and hands-on training for Early Childhood Education students. Her vision was not only to build capacity and training opportunities, but to create a space that would serve as a community resource and network for continuing and family education throughout Skagit County. After receiving an $800,000 grant from Washington’s Department of Commerce in early 2019, we launched into a bull-blown fundraising effort to finish out the project. Today, we have raised over $3,000,000 in community donations and grants, including a $1.5 million grant from Head Start. This project wouldn’t be where it is today without Sue’s leadership, passion and vision. To honor her commitment, SVC’s Board of Trustees recently approved naming the building the Sue Krienen Early Learning & Childcare Center. We expect construction to be complete on this project in March 2022, after we break ground in May 2021.
