Dana Marie Obey

Fall 2024
Transforming Dental Care in Tribal Communities

Dana Marie Obey, a single mother and member of the Sault Ste Marie of Chippewa Indians, is part of the first cohort in SVC’s Dental Therapy Education Program. This innovative program, created in partnership with the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, is designed to address oral health disparities in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Dana’s path has included major obstacles, such as housing instability, urgent car repairs, and health issues that nearly forced her to pause her education.

Critical support from the SVC Foundation’s Student Emergency Fund helped Dana secure stable housing and remain enrolled in her program. The fund plays a vital role in breaking cycles of poverty by helping students navigate unexpected financial and personal crises so they can stay in school. Dana’s perseverance—and the timely support from donors—demonstrates how community investment can foster stability and long-term success for students facing adversity.
