Fall 2024

Angus Nelson, SVC athletic scholarship recipient, is a member of Skagit Valley College’s men’s basketball team and an international student from Melbourne, Australia. He came to SVC eager to take on new challenges. Trading the beaches of Australia for the Pacific Northwest, he brought with him athletic skills and the resilience he gained through his experience in beach rescues and first aid that taught him to face life’s unpredictable challenges.

“Moving to Skagit Valley College was one of the biggest challenges of my life,” Angus shared. “But I knew it was an opportunity to push myself outside my comfort zone.” On the basketball court, Angus is a leader, helping boost the Cardinals’ performance. Beyond sports, his leadership extends to academics and sharing his Australian culture with teammates while learning from the diverse backgrounds of his peers at SVC.

Angus is pursuing a business degree with a focus on corporate accounting and finance. His passion for finance started in Australia, where he studied economics. He plans to use his education to address social and financial inequities. In addition to an athletic scholarship, Angus is the recipient of the Sidney and Fosma Rood Scholarship. Angus feels grateful for the opportunity to thrive. “Receiving these scholarships has truly been life-changing,” he said.
